A beautiful walk of about 8 miles from Postbridge through Bellever Forest to the river and the picturesque stone clapper bridge at Bellever via bronze age huts. While the main Forestry roads are wide and gravelled, some of route is rough, boggy, grassy, muddy and rocky. There are some great viewpoints.

For the disabled rambler this walk is considered mostly Category 2, but with occasional sections that are Category 3.

Walk overview

We all know what Dartmoor stone looks like. But what actually is it, why is it where it is, what has happened since the rock formed, and what evidence can be used to tell the story? Join us for a couple of hours’ gentle stroll around Burrator to have a look at a few of the pieces of evidence. Mostly we’ll be on even ground but we’ll probably pop up a tor or two.

We’re going to be scrambling around rocks, so please wear sturdy footwear. At least one of the places we’ll be visiting is a SSSI, so please leave your geology hammers at home! If you’ve got hand lens / magnifying glass, they may prove useful!

Walk overview

From Shipley Bridge a short road walk will take up to Diamond Lane which will take us up onto the Moors to Ball Gate. On this ‘Jobbers Path’ we can take a look at what is thought to be a Neolithic Burial Chamber (Long Barrow). A gentle stroll though a delightful shallow valley will lead to a reve that we follow up to Three Barrows. A visit to Petres Pits and Uncle Ab’s house will then lead to Bala Brook river valley. A climb up the other side will lead us past the Avon Filtration Station and back to the car park. Some rough moorland and possibly wet ground will be encountered on this walk of almost 6 miles.

Join Shona for a beautiful, relaxed and interesting all-day walk from Combestone Tor, taking in Nakers Hill, Green Hill, Red Lake China Clay Works, Huntingdon Warren (including the new clapper bridge),
Pupers Hill, Snowdon Cairns and Ryder’s Hill. Much of this walk of 11 miles is over uneven terrain and includes boggy areas, mine workings and areas of clitter as well as some tracks. A good level of
fitness, and confidence walking on open moor, is required for this gem of a walk.

There is limited parking available at Combestone Tor, so car sharing is advised if possible.

This guided walk of just under 5 miles will follow the River Avon upstream to the dam with beautiful views of the river and surrounding landscape and plenty of history to explore en route. A good quality tarmac surface all the way. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the end!
