Our Mustard Seed Walks often pop into the Fox Tor cafe in Princetown for a cuppa, and we may well do this time, but we will head into the wilds of the South Moors to find the real Tor, also visiting the Ducks Pool letterbox. This walk will take us from Peat Cot past Nuns Cross Farm and Plym Ford up Gnats Hill and over some possibly tough and wet terrain.

Walk overview

The plan for this walk is to visit some of the interesting features on and around Brent Moor and the Quickbeam Hill area of Dartmoor. This 11 mile walk will be broadly circular, starting and finishing at the Shipley Bridge car parking area. There are many sites and aspects of interest on this walk ranging from extensive tinner’s pits to Bronze Age features. There are burial chambers, industrial excavations and Bronze Age enclosures too.

Walk overview

A bit of a wilderness walk over Black Dunghill, White Barrow and out to Lynch Tor. Some wild walking will take us to Cowsic Head, Beardown Man Standing Stone, Lydford Tor then back to Holming Beam. This will cover a distance of 8 miles and include some tough walking over Mat Grass and some boggy land. Expect wet feet!

Parking at Holming Beam is free. Booking is required for this activity.

27/08/2019 | Avon Dam and Beyond Strenuous walk

Walk overview

Join Shona as she shares her love for the moor on this circular all-day walk of about 10 miles to Avon Dam and beyond. The walk can be directed towards Huntingdon Warren or the magical Pile’s Copse, depending on the preference of the group. The walk takes in the beautiful Avon valley from Shipley Bridge to Avon Dam and continues up the Avon towards Huntingdon Warren. We will then loop around to meet the Two Moors Way and follow the Puffing Billy track past Left Lake to Three Barrows. From here we will cross the pretty Bala Brook and head to Black Tor before returning to Shipley Bridge. The terrain is a mix of good tracks and rough uneven moorland, with the potential for a steep ascent and descent if the group would like. Some areas may be boggy.

28/08/2019 | Snowdon and beyond! Strenuous walk

Walk overview

After a gentle stroll to Avon Dam we will continue up the Pupers Hill and beyond to Snowdon (not in Wales!). Continuing to the high point of Ryder’s Hill we will head south to Huntingdon Warren. Dropping down to cross the River Avon at the Clapper Bridge we will climb to Western White Barrow before returning via Eastern White Barrow and Brent Moor. We will be walking some rough moorland, possibly wet underfoot.

There is a £1 honesty box for parking at Shipley Bridge

Walk overview

A chance to explore the area around Kennon Hill, Buttern, Watern & Wild Tors, taking in both well- known sites including Scorhill and Raybarrow Pool, and some perhaps lesser known parts of the Moor. Come and see some of the work experienced by the Dartmoor Ranger Service. Distance 7 miles. Uneven ground and steep in one area. Boggy in places. Some existing tracks will be used but these are uneven and can be wet and muddy. The exact route for the day will depend on the weather and visibility etc so come with an open mind and lots of questions for Ian !

Join Shona for a beautiful, relaxed and interesting all-day walk from Combestone Tor, taking in Nakers Hill, Green Hill, Red Lake China Clay Works, Huntingdon Warren (including the new clapper bridge),
Pupers Hill, Snowdon Cairns and Ryder’s Hill. Much of this walk of 11 miles is over uneven terrain and includes boggy areas, mine workings and areas of clitter as well as some tracks. A good level of
fitness, and confidence walking on open moor, is required for this gem of a walk.

There is limited parking available at Combestone Tor, so car sharing is advised if possible.

31/08/2019 | Tavistock Ramblers Interpretation of the Mary Michael Pilgrimage Route – Part 1: Lydford to Belstone Strenuous walk

Walk overview

Join Paul Brookes from Tavistock Ramblers for an all day 12.5 mile linear walk from Lydford to Belstone via Gt Links Tor, Vellake Corner, Meldon Reservoir, Rowtor, Cullever Steps.
Tracks, open moorland, ascents and descents, some uneven ground. The Chapel Tea Rooms in Belstone will be open for walkers to avail themselves of a well deserved cup of tea and a piece of cake at the end of their walk. It will be necessary to take car(s) to Belstone Car Park (SX621938) in order to return walkers to Lydford. Parking at both car parks is free of charge.
