2017 commemorates the 200th anniversary of the opening of Tavistock canal in 1817. Before the Tavistock Canal was built there were no wheeled vehicles for the goods transported to and from the port at Morwellham. The solution was a canal – constructed by John Taylor over 14 years commencing in 1803. This new guide commemorates the bicentenary of the Tavistock Canal – opened in 1817 – a gives a potted history as well as routes for two self-guided walks along its banks.
