National Navigation Award Bronze course

Walk Overview

A 2 day non-residential course based on the East of Dartmoor and covering the syllabus of the NNAS Bronze Award. Entirely practical and ideal for those with limited navigation skills. The first day will start from Haytor Lower Car Park (Grid Ref 765771) and the second from the car park on Trendlebeare down ( I will show you where this is at the end of day 1, it is only a 5 minute drive from Haytor). Each day will run from 9 until 5 and there may be a little overnight “Homework”. The second day will include an element of assessment.
Skills covered include
Map Symbols and scales. Map orientation. Use of linear features as handrails. Judging distance. Contour appreciation. Route planning and understanding rights of way.
Good footwear, Waterproofs and a packed lunch are essential. If you have them, bring your own Laminated OS 1:25000 Dartmoor map and Silva type compass , although these can be provided, a permanent marker pen and a watch.
