26/08/2019 | Accessible Walk – for Mobility Scooters – Fernworthy Reservoir & Forest Moderate walk

Walk overview

A walk of approximately 6.5 miles alongside part of this pretty reservoir home to birds such as Heron, Snipe & Grebe, then through Fernworthy Forest. We can find a Bronze Age stone circle, burial cairns & stone rows within the forest which is mostly coniferous. It’s peaceful and tranquil and has occasional views of moorland. There are ponies, cattle and sheep at various times and you might just spot a deer. Paths are a mixture of wide forestry roads and narrow, bumpy and muddy tracks.

For the disabled rambler this activity is considered Category 3 difficulty – rough tracks with some steep sections. For walkers it is considered to be of moderate difficulty.

A moderate walk of just under 4 miles to visit the Meldon Quarries. The terrain is comparatively flat but with uneven surfaces. Sturdy footwear will be required.

27/08/2019 | Mary – Michael Pilgrimage Walk Day Two Moderate walk

Walk overview

This is a gentle pilgrimage stroll on Day Two of the Mary – Michael Way from Sourton Church on the West side of Dartmoor, through Meldon and on to Belstone Church and village for about 5pm. The walk is being led by a qualified Dartmoor guide from Moorland Guides. We will start Day Two at 10am at Sourton in the Village Hall Car park to walk to Belstone by about 5pm then we will be brought back to our cars at Sourton. We will have a lunch stop at Fitz’s Well near Okehampton Battle Camp for a picnic lunch. There will again be plenty of opportunity to experience quiet reflection and contemplation along this stroll with far reaching views and calling in at significant points of interest along our route. The distance to Fitz’s Well is 5 miles, the complete walk to Belstone is 8 miles.

The walk down and back from the Hydro Turbine is 3 miles, strenuous in places and does include step sections.

Parking at Castle Drogo is free for National Trust members. Non members pay £2.00 for 2 hours or £4.00 all day.

Dogs are welcome on leads. However they are not permitted in the Turbine House but can be tied up outside.

A beautiful walk of about 8 miles from Postbridge through Bellever Forest to the river and the picturesque stone clapper bridge at Bellever via bronze age huts. While the main Forestry roads are wide and gravelled, some of the route is rough, boggy, grassy, muddy and rocky. There are some great viewpoints.

Walk overview

Journey back in time by walking part of the old South Zeal-Hangingstone Hill peat merchants and tinners track that skirts dangerous Raybarrow Pool, visiting the Bronze Age Whitmoor stone circle with its magnificent 360 degree views, and impressive reconstructed triple stone row known as the Graveyard or Cemetery. Climbing up Cosdon Beacon for stunning views, we end our day with a refreshing swim at the beautiful Shilley Pool. For safety reasons this event is limited to those aged 16 and over. Total distance will be just under 6 miles.
