MAP-READING AND USE OF COMPASS – IMPROVERS

Walk Overview

With the aim of improving your confidence, enjoyment and safety when walking on the moor the day will revise the basic techniques of map-reading and using a compass and introduce new ideas. It is suitable for those with some experience in the basics and wishing to improve. Courses for complete beginners are also offered. We will cover taking and using bearings from ground to map and map to ground; interpreting ground features; calculating distances and directions; other methods of determining position; planning and following a simple route. Maps and compasses are provided but you are welcome to bring your own. A list of other recommended equipment and additional information will be supplied on booking. Family groups are very welcome.

Other dates or times are available (currently May 26,27,30, Jun 1,2). Entirely bespoke days for groups can also be arranged. Mentored navigation days making use of the various techniques are also run.
