07/05/2021 | A Day on the Bog! Moderate walk

Walk overview

Did you know that the Earth’s bogs store more carbon than its rainforests? Bog mosses are hero plants, building peat bogs at the rate of a metre per millennium. The bogs that blanket the upland plateaux of North and South Dartmoor are six metres thick in places; not only do they lock away carbon but they regulate river flow, preventing flood and drought downstream, and are home to some rare and extraordinary plants and animals. Plants here have to live off just rainwater and sunshine; all that is except those which have taken to eating insects! We’ll go in search of these special little plants, learn more about life on the bog and enjoy the wild, remote beauty of Dartmoor’s peaty heart.

The day involves walking approx. 8 miles, some of it on rough, wet and slightly boggy ground. Walking boots will do fine; no need for wellies unless you enjoy walking that far in them.

We will be a small group and keep our distance from each other as per government guidelines. If you develop Covid symptoms or need to self-isolate, we will offer you another date or a refund.

08/05/2021 | Navigating on Open Moorland Moderate walk

Walk overview

This course is for anyone who has previously attended an introductory navigation course or knows the basics of map reading and can at least half-remember how to take a compass bearing. It will equip you to plan your own moorland routes and to start navigating on open moorland, on what can often seem like rather featureless terrain.

We will plan together a route of 7-8 miles on open moorland, taking into consideration the weather, the conditions and the ability of our group. We will revise the basics of map reading and compass use and practise these repeatedly. You will learn to look more carefully at gentle changes in the height of the land and other subtle features that may be all you have to navigate by at times. By the end of the day, you should feel a degree of competence to navigate on this terrain and be aware of your limits and of what you need to work on.

We will be a small group and keep our distance from each other in accordance with government guidelines. If you develop Covid symptoms or need to self-isolate, we will offer you another date or a refund.

For further details contact the trainer, Geri Skeens.

30/05/2021 | Explore a Rainforest! Easy walk

Walk overview

Yes, we have rainforests on Dartmoor! Temperate rainforest is a rare habitat, rich in biodiversity. We visit one of Dartmoor’s upland oakwoods, Black-a-Tor Copse, lesser known than Wistman’s Wood, more remote and just as charming.

You will learn what makes these places so special and fragile, and consider some of the species they contain, from ferns that grow on tree branches to lichens and mosses that cover almost every surface. Each participant will receive a hand lens (new, packaged Covid-securely and yours to keep) – you’ll be amazed how much more you can see. You will learn the names of two or three species but the day is not so much about absorbing facts as appreciating this very special habitat.

The day involves walking approx. 6 miles, some of it on uneven ground, and a bit of clambering over boulders.

We will be a small group and keep our distance from each other as per government guidelines. If you develop Covid symptoms or need to self-isolate, we will offer you another date or a refund.

28/08/2021 | Whitehorse Hill Bronze Age Cist Strenuous walk

Walk overview

A circular walk to the remote Bronze Age cist – a stone grave – recently excavated to reveal contents preserved in peat for millennia. The ground is uneven and boggy in places, with tussocky grass in others, and a couple of narrow streams, so a challenging walk, made worthwhile by the remote peatland beauty of Whitehorse Hill, by the prehistoric monuments we encounter en route, and if fine some stunning views across the North moors.
