27/08/2022 | Belstone walk – a stone circle and couple of wild swims

Especially for the wild swimmers amongst you – join Sue for a varied walk up the military track from Belstone to the Taw Ford for a dip then up over Belstone Tor at the Higher Tor end and along a grassy track to the Nine Maidens stone circle and down to the East Okement for a dip in the waterfall pool, return via a bridle path and minor lanes to Belstone where there is an opportunity for refreshment !
The River valleys can be damp and the paths can be uneven, the Moorland section is largely on tracks but ground is uneven and can be boggy. Outwards track from Belstone is paved with gravel and stones. A steepish ascent to the summit of Belstone tor and a narrow, steep path to the waterfall on the East Okement and approximately 300m of height gained and lost en route.

This route goes across Harrowbeer Airfield and onto the Drakes Trail with some great views over parts of the western moor. We then walk down to Clearbrook taking in Devonport & Drake’s Leat and the tramway. This Category 1 walk for people using mobility scooters is also open to all walkers. Support dogs welcome

Join Ian for a chance to visit Crazywell Pool and the Devonport Leat with a small detour to the Black Tor Falls tin working site from the medieval period. Our return will be via Leather Tor Farm and Leather Tor Bridge.

These taster walks will introduce you to the Nordic Walking technique using Nordic Walking poles that will be provided. Following the technique learning session there will be the opportunity to try out your Nordic Walking technique on a walk.
The walk will be on tracks that might be slightly uneven and rocky in places.

28/08/2022 | Belstone Moorland Walk

On this walk your guides, Bob Adamson and Mike Jeffery, will gradually take you up onto The Moors with panoramic views via The Tarka Trail, East Okement River, Woodlands and a cottage with a very naughty past!
From the high moorland we descend to hear the story of Cullever Steps, then on to Scary Tor, Nine Stones before returning to Belstone. Where you may wish to visit The Tors Inn or have a cream tea at The Old School Tearooms.
Wear suitable walking gear.
Please bring food and drink for coffee break and lunch.
There are no toilet facilities in Belstone, nearest Toilets are at The White House Services on the A30.
Quiet dogs on leads welcome.

We will start at the Haytor Middle car park at this iconic Dartmoor location and during the walk visit the tor as well as the industrial landscape of tin miners and granite quarrying. This is a Category 3 route for people using mobility scooters with grass and gravel tracks which can be rough and there are some hills. Able bodied walkers also welcome. Support dogs on leads welcome

29/08/2022 | Study of Hutholes Mediaeval abandoned settlement

Join Ian for an easy stroll to look at the site of six abandoned and ruinous old medieval houses which make up this old settlement which was built on the ruins of an much earlier Saxon homestead. This visit is part one of a trio of three medieval tours by Ian.

30/08/2022 | Tavy Cleave Traipse and dip

A varied walk over Ger tor and up to the amazing Watern Oke Bronze Age settlement returning through the beautiful Tavy Cleave and a swim in the waterfall pools before returning to the car park. Whether or not we do this clockwise or anti clockwise depends on the weather !
The Moorland section is on tracks but ground is uneven and can be boggy and it is exposed on the summit. Ground is uneven around the settlement. Return down the valley is quite rocky. Approximately 269m of height gained and lost en route.

30/08/2022 | Exploring the high moor: an accessible walk

A circular ramble following the ‘Okehampton Military Ring Road’ into the heart of Dartmoor. It is a category 3 walk for people using mobility scooters but other walkers also welcome. There is one ford to cross so scooters need to be capable of driving through water. The road is part tarmac, part gravel some of it rocky and bumpy. This is an area used extensively by the military for training and there are several visual examples of this to be discovered. Some superb views across Dartmoor, from the highest part of the Moor. Support dogs welcome

Join Mike Jeffery and Bob Adamson on this evening stroll around Bellever Tor, the woods and the antiquities. Park at the Postbridge Forest Car Park by the Cattle Grid at the junction to Bellever.. Bring a torch, a snack/flask and warm clothing. No dogs on this wildlife walk

30/08/2022 | Stepping Stones Walk

Starting from the Dunnabridge Pound large car park (SX642747) we will walk across the bridge to Dunnabridge Pound and take the track to Laughter Hole Farm. Shortly after this we will cross the Easy Dart River on our first of three sets of stepping stones. From here a track and the riverside path will take us to Badgers Holt. Tracks and roads will then take us past Huccaby Church to the village of Hexworthy. A short walk will then take us to our second set of stepping stones before we arrive at the large sweep of stepping stones over the West Dart Riven. A pleasant stroll will take us back to the road and the car park. Please note that if we have had heavy rain I will change the route as the striping stones may be submerged! I have put this as a non-dog friendly walk due to the stepping stones.

Join local guide Chris Bourne on this walk over the High moorland above Belstone from the village car park by the Village Hall. We will go up to Belstone Tors and across the open moorland south to Higher Tor and dropping down to the Taw valley and marsh to return along the track back to the village.

31/08/2022 | Introduction to Dartmoor

The walk will be from Haytor visitor’s car park on a circular route which will take in Haytor Quarries, Smallacombe rocks. Holwell Tor Quarries up to Haytor and back to the visitor’s car park. The route is along grass tracks with some single tracks. A short distance along grass and boggy paths where a little more careful walking required. The walk back from Haytor to the car park is down a steep hill which can be slippery when wet. This walk is aimed at anyone who would like a walk over the moors who can easily walk 6km.
The walk will include a talk on granite, quarries, bronze age habitats bogs and tors.
Beginning at the visitors car park. There are car parking charges. £2 for two hours and £4 all day. If you do not wish to pay charges 400meters along the road is a nonpaying car park but is on rough ground. What3words trails.rationing.feathers

Did you know the Earth’s bogs store more carbon than its rainforests? Bog mosses are hero plants, building the brilliant bog that blankets Dartmoor’s upland plateaux and is home to some rare and extraordinary plants and animals. Plants here have to live off just rainwater and sunshine; all that is except those which have taken to eating insects, as seen on The Green Planet! Join Geri Skeens as you go in search of these sticky little plants and others that flower in high summer such as colourful bog asphodel and the waving heads of bog cotton. We’ll learn about life on the bog and enjoy the wild, remote beauty of Dartmoor’s peaty heart.
Some of the terrain is rough, wet and slightly boggy. Walking boots will do fine; no need for wellies.

01/09/2022 | Badger’s Holt Circular Walk

Parking at the large pay and display car park at Dartmeet (SX672733), we will proceed up river on an increasingly pleasant path until we meet the small road that will take us up the the tiny village of Cherwell. A path offering great views the northern moors will take us to the norther end of Corndon Down ridge. We will then walk south along the ridge until we reach the rocky outcrop of Corndon Tor. We will then proceed downhill past the memorial cross and coffin stone back to Badger’s Holt. Dogs are welcome on a short lead.

02/09/2022 | Merrivale through 5000 years: an accessible walk

Explore Bronze Age stone rows and hut circles, medieval tin mining, nineteenth century routeways and modern conservation in the heart of Dartmoor. This walk is a category 3 event on grass tracks and rough ground for people using mobility scooters but able bodied walkers also welcome.
This walk can be undertaken with the Two tors walk which starts in the same car park with time for a lunch break. Support dogs welcome

02/09/2022 | Two tors and great views: an accessible walk

This is your opportunity to tackle Little Mis tor and Great Mis tor on your mobility scooter. There is a long hill up on a gravel track which can be rough in places with a return down the same route. There are great views to Plymouth Sound when the weather is fine.
This walk can be done with the Merrivale walk which starts in the same car park in the morning.

02/09/2022 | From Black Tor Falls to Crazywell Pool and more…

There’s a lot to see on this walk: the Devonport Leat, an aqueduct, a waterfall, a blowing house, two prehistoric stone rows and a Bronze Age settlement, Crazywell Pool and Cross, and Leather Tor clapper bridge. In between are some magnificent moorland views as we walk alongside the leat and some riverside/woodland walking as we follow the Meavy upstream at the end of the walk. There will be the opportunity to swim in Crazywell Pool, weather permitting. It’s a safe and (relatively) warm body of water. Well behaved dogs on leads welcome.

This guided walk will follow the old railway line from Princetown to Foggintor Quarry. Enjoy the views over the moor and history dating back to the Bronze Age. This is a Category 3 walk for people using mobility scooters as the railway track is rough in places and access to the quarry is on rough grass and steep in places. Able bodied walkers also welcome
This walk can be undertaken with the Walk with Views which starts in the same car park with time for a lunch break.

This Category 2 walk for people using mobility scooters uses the refurbished track to South Hessary tor with an extension to Nuns Cross depending on the group. Able bodied walkers also welcome. It has tremendous views across the moor. Support dogs welcome.

03/09/2022 | Cox Tor and beyond: A high moorland meander

After climbing to the top of Cox Tor, we pick up the old quarryman’s path that leads us down into the Colly Brook valley, through lovely woods and past a number of pools and small waterfalls. Crossing the stream, we climb gradually over Smeardon Down on the old peatcutters’ track to lonely Stephen’s Grave where we walk down to visit a large Bronze Age village. We cross the stream again, pass yet another prehistoric settlement and walk back past Roos and Staple Tors with magnificent views in all directions.

A walk discovering the ancient Lichway, including a footbridge and stepping stones over the Tavy. Learn the history of a centuries old Dartmoor farm now used by the Army, walk up above Tavy Cleave to look at one of the biggest and best preserved Bronze Age villages, and lots of stories. Some uneven moorland.

An expedition to Fur Tor, “The Queen of the Moor”

Join us for this Classic Dartmoor route to Fur Tor via the East Dart Valley.
A long day out but a rewarding one.
We will start fairly early to benefit from the cool of the morning but be sure to bring plenty of water and protection from the weather be that sun or rain.
We are likely to be on our feet for for a full day with a stream or two to hop over but our pace will be kind.
Peat Passes, Skylarks, tales of miners and tinners, stone rows and mysteries will pass the time as we take in the magic of the remoter north moor.

Maximum of 10 participants.

We will meet at the car park called Sand Pits and also Okehampton Moor at the split in the military ring road where the barrier drops on firing days.
Walking from Sandpits to Row Tor West Mill and up to Yes Tor and High Willhays; along to Dinger then back down past East Mill to Sandpits.

Stroll a section of ‘The King Way’ – an ancient track on Dartmoor that originally extended from London to Plymouth to carry the King’s post. This walk includes stunning views; prehistoric burial chambers, and a stone circle not shown on the maps; an impressive Victorian viaduct and the ruins of a failed ice-works enterprise; beautiful tors; and a mysterious tale.

04/09/2022 | Archaeology – Walking in ancient places

Join Dr Laura Basell and Dr Lee Bray to explore one of Dartmoor’s most ancient places. We will be running a guided walk at the prehistoric Tor Enclosure site of Dewerstone as part of the Dartmoor Tor Enclosures Survey Project (DATES) supported by University of Leicester students. DATES is led by Dr Laura Basell (University of Leicester) and Dr Lee Bray (Dartmoor National Park Authority) funded by University of Leicester, DNPA and the Society of Antiquaries. Since 2019 we have conducted geoarchaeological fieldwork with a team of specialists at Dewerstone and several other sites on Dartmoor, and we’re keen to share some of our results with you. The walk will be occurring towards the end of this year’s fieldwork season.

We’ll take a look at key landscape features, talk about the history of research at the sites, and give you a straightforward explanation of the fieldwork methods we used. We will be very happy to answer any questions you might have.

We will stick largely to the paths, but the terrain is rough and can be steep in places. Consequently this event is not suitable for young children, those with mobility or serious health issues.

Time: We will gather in the carpark at 11.00 am
Weather: At this time of year, we hope the weather will be fair. However we reserve the right to cancel the event in the event of illness, if conditions are not safe, or visibility is poor.
What to wear: Sturdy walking boots or wellingtons. It may be wet underfoot. Wear layers of clothes. It would also be sensible to bring waterproofs, sunblock and a hat. We recommend long trousers as there is a risk of ticks.
Facilities: There are no toilets available in the carpark or on site.
Food: Feel free to bring a drink and a packed lunch

The car park start is NOT the main Cadover Bridge car park on the Plympton side of the bridge, it is on the north side on the Yelverton side in the small car park above the cottage in the trees.
