Explore Shoveldown Settlement & RitualComplex

Walk Overview

Join us for a guided walk and talk through the largest Bronze Age settlement in the UK and associated Ritual Complex. We’ll explore the stone rows, cairn, cistvaen, standing stone, field systems, pounds and hut circles all within a 2 mile radius at Shoveldown in the shadow of Kestor. Dartmoor’s Daughter is collaborating with Lee Bray, Head of Archaegology for the Dartmoor National Park Authority to bring you insights into the lives of our neolithic, bronze age, and iron age, and medieval ancestors.

Level: 2 out of 5. The walk is mainly along a grassy path with a gentle incline at the start. We will also walk through some scrubby and uneven grassy areas to explore parts of Shoveldown. You need to be comfortable spending 3-4 hours in hilly moorland terrain.

Meeting point: 10.45am for 11am start at the grassy carpark on the right hand side of the lane as you cross over the cattle grid on to Dartmoor and drive up towards Batworthy above Chagford. Follow signs from Chagford for ‘Fernworthy Resevoir’ until you see the turning right to ‘Kestor’.

What to bring: Dartmoor weather is highly changeable so please bring/wear plenty of warm layers, sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing (even if the forecast is fine!), lunch/snacks and drink.

Cost: £10 adults. A portion of this fee goes towards ‘Donate for Dartmoor’. Group size is limited so pre-booking essential. Click here to purchase your ticket https://www.eventbrite.com/e/explore-shoveldown-settlements-ritual-complex-with-lee-bray-dnpa-archaeologist-tickets-33669705997

Cancellation policy: The event will go ahead come rain or shine. Sorry no refunds if you are unable to attend.

Risk: No liability accepted for accidents or incidents
