A Mustard Seed Walk Slow & Short walk around three spectacular tors: Sharp Tor, Yar Tor and Corndon Down rocks. A few bronze age hut circles and a stone row will be encountered, as well as ancient field systems and a not so ancient memorial stone cross.
This walk will be taken at a slow pace with plenty of rest stops.

24/08/2019 | Okehampton Battle Camp Easy walk

Walk overview

During the morning we will visit the Okehampton Battle Camp museum and look at artefacts of the military use of the Dartmoor during the First World War. Lt Col Tony Clark, previously Commandant of the Dartmoor Training Area, and the present Commandant , Lt Col Crispin d’Apice, will give an explanation with illustrations of how troops trained and lived before deploying to the trenches.

Booking is essential.

Drive to the main gate of the camp and take with you some photo I.D like a Driving Licence to gain entry.NO I.D. NO Entry. NO exception. NO walk!
You will be directed to the parking on the parade ground by the security gate staff.

This guided walk of just over 6 miles will take us up onto the open Moor above the River Lyd following the track bed of the old railway around Great Links Tor to the Rattlebrook Peat Works, as we explore the area’s industrial archaeology. The stony track is uneven and can be wet in places.

For the disabled rambler this activity is considered as difficulty Category 3, with occasional Category 2 sections. For the walker it is considered an easy walk with some moderate sections.

We all know what Dartmoor stone looks like. But what actually is it, why is it where it is, what has happened since the rock formed, and what evidence can be used to tell the story? Join us for a couple of hours’ gentle stroll around Burrator to have a look at a few of the pieces of evidence. Mostly we’ll be on even ground but we’ll probably pop up a tor or two.

Booking is required for this activity.

We’re going to be scrambling around rocks, so please wear sturdy footwear. At least one of the places we’ll be visiting is a SSSI, so please leave your geology hammers at home! If you’ve got hand lens / magnifying glass, they may prove useful!
