A walk to explore some Dartmoor stories. How do you escape the pixies’ spells? Who puts the flowers on Kitty Jay’s grave? Was it a storm in Widecombe in 1638 – or something more sinister? We will visit squares J17, J16 and K17 from Dartmoor 365 – if you dare to come …..! The walk covers three miles along quiet lanes, open moorland and rocky paths. Free parking at Hound Tor Car Park, where there is usually an ice cream van but no public toilets.

Walk overview

An easy, relaxing afternoon stroll out to the wonderful Wistman’s Wood (L9), and back via Devonport leat and Beardown Farm (M9). There will be some time to explore the woods and/or sit for quiet contemplation. Bring snacks and a drink. This walk of just over 4 miles will be over mostly even ground, but with some degree of clitter and possibly some boggy ground. Parking is available free of charge in the car park opposite the Two Bridges Hotel. Booking is required because places will be limited. When booking please provide a brief outline of your walking experience, next of kin details and relevant medical information – all of which will be treated in the strictest confidence).

Walk overview

Most visitors to Dartmoor try to avoid the bogs and mires that make up so much of the landscape, but this is your chance to explore a bog. Come along an join Barbara Swinfen to find out about the amazing plants and animals that make up this fascinating habitat, and why it is so important. We hope to visit M18 & M19 and also L19. This should be an easy walk of 2 miles on tracks and over open moorland but will take in some boggy areas so boots are essential, and wellington boots advisable. Parking at the Hay Tor Visitor Centre car park is pay and display, and there are facilities at the centre.

Join your guide Dawn Williamson On a walk of approximately 3 miles looking at some of the history of the Princetown area. Aspects will include life in the Bronze Age, working in a medieval tin mine, a 19th century shooting range plus stories of people from the past. The walk is over uneven grass and stone tracks and suitable for all ages although activities will be aimed at children 7-14 years. The Dartmoor
365 squares visited will be 7N, 8N, 7O, 8O. Parking is available at the visitor centre pay and display car park and there are facilities and shops nearby.

26/08/2018 | Widecombes high points walk Easy walk

Walk overview

This area of the southeast moor has views over some of Dartmoor’s most spectacular tors and at sunset they are at their most beautiful. Starting at Hemsworthy Gate (L17), we stroll out to Top Tor and Pil Tor with their dramatic granite formations and prehistoric remains. We then head over to the other side of the valley and ascend Rippon Tor (M18) to visit the burial cairns and recumbent cross and soak up the glorious panorama all around us. This 3 mile walk is over good tracks, with one steady climb up to Rippon Tor and one ford crossing. Road parking at Hemsworthy gate between Haytor and Widecombe is free. There are no facilities nearby.

Forest Bathing, or Shinrin-Yoku, is a practice that combines mindfulness with being in nature. (No water is involved; the bathing element is about immersion in the restorative qualities of nature.)
We will take you on a gentle walk of about 1.5 miles over tracks and some uneven ground in the beautiful Fingle Woods and through a series of invitations practice activities that tune up your senses – finishing with a tea ceremony with plants we have foraged.
Following this practice has been proven to create a range of health benefits for the body and the mind. For more information visit www.aquafolium.co.uk.
We will be visiting square D17. Free parking is available at Fingle Bridge. The costs of the walk are being met by the Woodland Trust.

Join your guide [and the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust] for a gentle stroll of less than two miles over open grassland and paths taking in the area of Bellever to learn about how people used to live on Dartmoor, the role the ponies played in their lives and how ponies are used today to help manage the moor. The walk will be restricted to Dartmoor 365 squares K11 and L11. Parking at the Visitor Centre is currently free but please check on current status nearer the date. There are facilities nearby and at the Centre. This is a free walk, but donations to the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust will be gratefully received.

Explore Bellever [Walking with Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust] to learn about Dartmoor Letterboxes and visit a number of these hidden boxes. A fun event and a very gentle stroll over open grassland and paths, all of our walking will be in Dartmoor 365 grid square L11. The walk will be starting from the car park below the forest which can be accessed via a track almost opposite the Visitor Centre. Parking is free. The nearest facilities are available at the Visitor Centre. This is a free walk, but donations to the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust will be gratefully received.

A fun treasure hunt for all ages walking around the streets of Tavistock. See things that you have not seen before. We will meet outside the Tavistock Town Hall on Bedford Square. Town centre car parks are free for users after 6pm and there are facilities nearby to the start / end point.. The walk will be limited to 365 square N2 and a distance of approximately one and a half miles over made pavements. Start time is anywhere between 6:00pm and 7:00 pm. Just turn up. The challenge should take about 90 minutes to complete.
