A chance to explore this area of Dartmoor taking in both well- known sites and perhaps lesser known parts of the Moor. Come and see some of the work experienced by the Dartmoor Ranger Service. This walk of 7 miles will cover 365 squares E10-12, F10-12. There will be some uneven ground with boggy places and one steep incline. Parking is free along the edge of the common near Buttern Farm, but there are no facilities.

Dowsing has been used for thousands of years to find water, archaeological remains, missing people, and allergy testing. Led by Dartmoor’s Daughter and a member of ‘Devon Dowsers’, we will learn how to dowse for water, ‘earth energies’, and archaeological remains at the impressive Drizzlecombe ceremonial complex. The best preserved of Dartmoor’s prehistoric ceremonial sites, it includes stone rows, standing stones, the ‘Giant’s Basin’ cairn as well as barrows, cists, and hut circles. D365 squares include S6 and S7. The day is designed for adults but older, engaged children are welcome. The walk will cover 2.5 miles across open moorland and tracks with occasional rocky and boggy sections. Parking below Gutter Tor is free but can be limited, and there are no facilities nearby. The start point will be outside the old scouting hut.

31/08/2018 | Accessible event for wheeled ramblers Strenuous walk

This event is aimed at Ramblers who use disability access vehicles such as scooters, trampers etc as well as families with all-terrain push chairs. Anyone is welcome to join these series of events over the festival, which will stick to accessible tracks. Each of these events will be led by a wheeled guide experienced in accessible rambling as well as a Moorland Guide. Take a packed lunch with you and clothing suitable for the changeable weather on Dartmoor. The ramble will start at the public car park at Belstone Village on the left as you approach the village. There are some limited facilities at the village hall but there are facilities at the Old Chapel Tea Rooms in the village which will be open today. Parking is free. We will be going out in the morning and also in the afternoon and using the Old Chapel Tea Rooms for lunch so bring some cash with you! The morning will be up into the Taw Valley looking at wonderful views. You can leave at lunchtime if you only want a morning ramble but if you want to stay on for another in the afternoon then that is also available to extend this into an all day event.
This event will be a level two / three ramble suitable for the more robust tramper type of vehicle. Reserve the whole day for this event. Meet at 11am to give the guide from Cornwall time to get there.

Meeting at Belstone car park at the northern edge of the village we will use half of the available cars to ferry walkers across to Lydford High Down from where we will walk back to Belstone, taking in Bleak House, Cranmere Pool and Oke Tor. We will then use those cars left at Belstone to get walkers back to their cars at Lydford. This walk of approximately ten miles will cover some challenging terrain, including steep hills, clitter, boggy and uneven ground. Parking at Belstone and Lydford High Down is free, but there are no facilities nearby at either location. The Dartmoor 365 squares covered will be G4&5, F6,7,8, E8, D8, C8, B8, A8.

A quick recap of navigation skills at the Princetown Visitor Centre then a practical navigation session out on Dartmoor consolidating the basics and taking in a few more advanced map and compass skills. Walk direction and distance will depend on participant ability and weather conditions (you don’t have to walk far to navigate well). Join us to experience the dark skies magic of Dartmoor. Among the astronomical treats to enjoy on this evening will be Mars and Saturn – two of the most iconic planets in our solar system – as well as galaxies, nebulae, constellations and more. Dartmoor’s Daughter will lead the walk and talk about the landscape context and tales from the area. And Dartmoor Skies will talk about the Solar System and pitch their large telescopes to offer everyone the opportunity to view some of our neighbouring planets and more. D365 Squares include L19, K19, L18. Our back-up plan for cloudy skies will be a local pub/hotel. This walk of 2 miles is over grassland. Pay and display parking is available at the Visitor Centre, but the facilities will be closed at the time of the start and finish.

Starting at the popular and picturesque Cadover Bridge this walk, although largely over tracks and footpaths can at times strenuous, but is well worth the effort when you take in the views from the top of the Dewerstone.
The walk will be led by the National Trust Area Ranger for South West Dartmoor Peter Davies and will take in 365 square ‘T5’. Parking is free at Cadover Bridge although there are no facilities nearby.

During the walk we will visit the Okehampton Battle Camp museum and look at artefacts of the military use of the Dartmoor during the First World War. Lt Col Tony Clark (OBE), previously Commandant of the Dartmoor Training Area, and the present Commandant , Lt Col Crispin d’Apice, will give an explanation with illustrations of how troops trained and lived before deploying to the trenches. The walk will take place in squares B7,8 & 9, C8 & 9, D8&9, E8&9. Parking is available at Okehampton Battle Camp free of charge. Drive to the main gate of the camp and you will be directed to the parking on the parade ground by the security gate staff. It is essential that you take with you some photo I.D like a Driving Licence in order to gain entry. You will not be admitted without ID. Walking will be over tracks and uneven grass, covering a distance of 8 miles. Whilst the event is free, suggested donations of £5.00 per head to the Army Benevolent Fund are welcomed. Walk with Dartmoor’s Daughter to a beautiful river wild swimming spot. The views are stunning. And along the way we will learn about the history of Dartmoor, the legend of the ‘Witches Pool’; and map out the main river routes moor to sea. D365 square includes G4. The river pool is pretty and not very deep so best for 5-10 years old. Children must be good swimmers or have arm bands and be accompanied by parent/guardian. Bring a picnic lunch. The walk is approximately 1 mile over made track. Parking at the High Down Car Park behind the Dartmoor Inn at Lydford is free but there are no facilities nearby.
