This guided walk of just under 6 miles will look at the varying habitats of Yarner Wood and the Bovey Valley and the human history of the area. It will be on gravel tracks with some gradients, and small amounts of heathland paths.

For disabled ramblers this walk has been categorised as difficulty level 2, although there are some sections which are considered level 3.

26/08/2019 | Accessible Walk – for Mobility Scooters – Fernworthy Reservoir & Forest Moderate walk

Walk overview

A walk of approximately 6.5 miles alongside part of this pretty reservoir home to birds such as Heron, Snipe & Grebe, then through Fernworthy Forest. We can find a Bronze Age stone circle, burial cairns & stone rows within the forest which is mostly coniferous. It’s peaceful and tranquil and has occasional views of moorland. There are ponies, cattle and sheep at various times and you might just spot a deer. Paths are a mixture of wide forestry roads and narrow, bumpy and muddy tracks.

For the disabled rambler this activity is considered Category 3 difficulty – rough tracks with some steep sections. For walkers it is considered to be of moderate difficulty.

This guided walk of just over 6 miles will take us up onto the open Moor above the River Lyd following the track bed of the old railway around Great Links Tor to the Rattlebrook Peat Works, as we explore the area’s industrial archaeology. The stony track is uneven and can be wet in places.

For the disabled rambler this activity is considered as difficulty Category 3, with occasional Category 2 sections. For the walker it is considered an easy walk with some moderate sections.

28/08/2019 | Snowdon and beyond! Strenuous walk

Walk overview

After a gentle stroll to Avon Dam we will continue up the Pupers Hill and beyond to Snowdon (not in Wales!). Continuing to the high point of Ryder’s Hill we will head south to Huntingdon Warren. Dropping down to cross the River Avon at the Clapper Bridge we will climb to Western White Barrow before returning via Eastern White Barrow and Brent Moor. We will be walking some rough moorland, possibly wet underfoot.

There is a £1 honesty box for parking at Shipley Bridge

A beautiful walk of about 8 miles from Postbridge through Bellever Forest to the river and the picturesque stone clapper bridge at Bellever via bronze age huts. While the main Forestry roads are wide and gravelled, some of the route is rough, boggy, grassy, muddy and rocky. There are some great viewpoints.

Journey back in time by walking part of the old South Zeal-Hangingstone Hill peat merchants and tinners track that skirts dangerous Raybarrow Pool, visiting the Bronze Age Whitmoor stone circle with its magnificent 360 degree views, and impressive reconstructed triple stone row known as the Graveyard or Cemetery. Climbing up Cosdon Beacon for stunning views, we end our day with a refreshing swim at the beautiful Shilley Pool. For safety reasons this event is limited to those aged 16 and over. Total distance will be just under 6 miles.

Walk overview

A chance to explore the area around Kennon Hill, Buttern, Watern & Wild Tors, taking in both well- known sites including Scorhill and Raybarrow Pool, and some perhaps lesser known parts of the Moor. Come and see some of the work experienced by the Dartmoor Ranger Service. Distance 7 miles. Uneven ground and steep in one area. Boggy in places. Some existing tracks will be used but these are uneven and can be wet and muddy. The exact route for the day will depend on the weather and visibility etc so come with an open mind and lots of questions for Ian !

30/08/2019 | A Pile of Barrows Moderate walk

Walk overview

From Shipley Bridge a short road walk will take up to Diamond Lane which will take us up onto the Moors to Ball Gate. On this ‘Jobbers Path’ we can take a look at what is thought to be a Neolithic Burial Chamber (Long Barrow). A gentle stroll though a delightful shallow valley will lead to a reve that we follow up to Three Barrows. A visit to Petres Pits and Uncle Ab’s house will then lead to Bala Brook river valley. A climb up the other side will lead us past the Avon Filtration Station and back to the car park. Some rough moorland and possibly wet ground will be encountered on this walk of almost 6 miles.

30/08/2019 | Accessible Walk – for Mobility scooters. ’Military Ring Road’ Okehampton Range. Moderate walk

Walk overview

A circular ramble of about 7 miles following the ‘Okehampton Military Ring Road’ into the heart of Dartmoor. There is one ford to cross so scooters need to be capable of driving through water. This road is part tarmac, part gravel some of it rocky and bumpy. This is an area used extensively by the military for training and there are several visual examples of this to be discovered. Some superb views across Dartmoor, from the highest part of the Moor.

For disabled ramblers, this walk has been appraised as category 3, requiring a tramper or equivalent.
