Walk overview

We will be visiting around 20 Dartmoor Tors and rocks on this 12 mile walk., including Lowery, Leather, Black, Hart, Down, Combeshead, Snapper and Rough tors. Visiting Grid squares including P6, Q6 and P8. The walking will be strenuous in many places as we will be passing through clitter fields and boggy ground as well as rough tracks and open moorland. Free parking is available at the meeting site but there are no facilities nearby.

25/08/2018 | South Moorland afternoon walk Moderate walk

Walk overview

Starting at Shipley Bridge (U14) we follow the Zeal Tor Tramway (T13) out onto the high moor and enjoy fantastic views of south Dartmoor. Then we drop down into the beautiful Avon valley passing medieval Huntingdon Cross (S12) and walking downstream as the river gradually widens into the reservoir (S13). The final easy stretch down the valley takes us past the ruins of Brentmoor House (T14). This walk covers a distance of 6 and a half miles. Most of the walk will be over good tracks, but with some uneven moorland and possibility of some boggy ground. Parking at Shipley Bridge is free but there are no facilities.

Walk overview

An easy, relaxing afternoon stroll out to the wonderful Wistman’s Wood (L9), and back via Devonport leat and Beardown Farm (M9). There will be some time to explore the woods and/or sit for quiet contemplation. Bring snacks and a drink. This walk of just over 4 miles will be over mostly even ground, but with some degree of clitter and possibly some boggy ground. Parking is available free of charge in the car park opposite the Two Bridges Hotel. Booking is required because places will be limited. 25/08/2018 | Okehampton Battle Camp Tour Moderate walk

Walk overview

During the walk we will visit the Okehampton Battle Camp museum and look at artefacts of the military use of the Dartmoor during the First World War. Lt Col Tony Clark (OBE), previously Commandant of the Dartmoor Training Area, and the present Commandant , Lt Col Crispin d’Apice, will give an explanation with illustrations of how troops trained and lived before deploying to the trenches. The walk will take place in squares B7,8 & 9, C8 & 9, D8&9, E8&9. Parking is available at Okehampton Battle Camp free of charge. Drive to the main gate of the camp and you will be directed to the parking on the parade ground by the security gate staff. It is essential that you take with you some photo I.D like a Driving Licence in order to gain entry. You will not be admitted without ID. Walking will be over tracks and uneven grass, covering a distance of 8 miles. Whilst the event is free, suggested donations of £5.00 per head to the Army Benevolent Fund are welcomed. Booking is required as numbers are limited.

This exciting day out is perfect for anyone wishing to safely explore some of Dartmoor’s steeper terrain or learn about safe movement in steep ground around the P6 square of Dartmoor-365. We will progress from easy hillsides to vertical cliffs experiencing all the skills you need to tackle this exciting and challenging terrain. The Day is led by Gavin Kelly; Experienced professional Mountaineering Instructor, Mountain Training Awards Trainer/ Assessor and coach. The walk is of approximately 3 miles, taking in clitter, rocky steps, exposed cliff edges and simple climbing. Parking at the lay by under Leeden Tor is free but there are no facilities nearby. Booking is essential as places are strictly limited.

Walk overview

Starting below Gutter Tor we’ll make our way to Ditsworthy Warren house (Dartmoor 365 square S8) and across a shallow part of the river to reach the hidden waterfall. We will visit the remains of an old longhouse before returning through the medieval field system before braving the river again. Total distance is approximately 5 miles. Apart from the wet crossing of the river, the ground is firm underfoot. Free parking is available at the spot beneath Gutter Tor, although there are no facilities here. Friendly dogs are welcome, but please ensure they remain on a lead. Please contact the guides by text or email when booking or confirming a place.

Join Bob and Margaret Phillimore from the Ivybridge Walking Club on a walk on a riverside and woodland walk leading onto Dartmoor with extensive views of South Dartmoor and surrounding area. The walk will take in Dartmoor 365 squares W10, W11, X10 & X11. This moderate walk is expected to cover a distance of about 6 and a half miles over uneven paths and tracks and open moorland which can be muddy in places. Parking is available free of charge at the Ivybridge / Watermark car park where the walk starts and there are pay and display car parks also nearby. This is a free walk, but donations to the Devon Air Ambulance will be gratefully received.

Utilising one of Dartmoor’s most popular climbing venues come and enjoy a day trying out this exhilarating combination of physical and mental challenges. The day will include rock climbing and abseiling.
We will provide all the necessary specialist safety equipment. A personal kit list will be provided on booking.

Walk overview

Join Richard Gooding for a mountain bike experience over the moors with a moorland guide to give extra knowledge of
Dartmoor which will include geology/history/ and archaeology of the moor and the National Park. The trip will be over tracks, disused railway with short sections of road cycling, and will cover approximately 20 miles visiting squares N8, O8, P8, Q8, R8, R7, R6, Q6, P7, O7, N7. The full cost includes cycle hire from Fox Tor Cafe, although riders with their own bikes are welcome at a cost of £18.00 per head. A packed lunch can be purchased from the cafe at the time of booking. Parking is available at Fox Tor Cafe for those hiring a bike, otherwise pay and display parking is available at the visitor centre nearby.

Walk overview

A walk with Tim Ferry to Piles Copse ancient oak wood (in 365 square U11) on the River Erme, looking at how different management practices affect the vegetation of Dartmoor and discussing what is best for the 21st Century. This walk of approximately 4 and a half miles will be over occasional clitter outcrops and through some tall bracken as well as open moorland. Parking at Harford Moor Gate is free, but there are no facilities nearby. Proceeds will go to the Air Ambulance appeal.
