This guided walk of just under 5 miles will follow the River Avon upstream to the dam with beautiful views of the river and surrounding landscape and plenty of history to explore en route. A good quality tarmac surface all the way. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the end!

This walk of 4 miles will take us over Shapley Tor on the north end of Hameldown before dropping down to study this wonderful site. A few paths but mostly over heather moorland. Parking is available at the roadside on the B3212, about 4 miles outside Moretonhampstead on an S bend and after a cattle grid.

01/09/2019 | Okehampton Battle Camp Visit Easy walk

Walk overview

During the morning we will visit the Okehampton Battle Camp museum and look at artefacts of the military use of the Dartmoor during the First World War. Lt Col Tony Clark, previously Commandant of the Dartmoor Training Area, and the present Commandant , Lt Col Crispin d’Apice, will give an explanation with illustrations of how troops trained and lived before deploying to the trenches.

Booking is required for this activity as group size is limited.

Parking is available at Okehampton Battle Camp Drive to the main gate of the camp and take with you some photo I.D like a Driving Licence to gain entry. NO I.D. NO Entry NO exception NO walk! You will be directed to the parking on the parade ground by the security gate staff.
